Threshold DAS (formerly Llanelli Women’s Aid Ltd) was founded in 1984, by a group of volunteers. In 1985 the first refuge was established. Due to the ever increasing numbers of women, plus the limited facilities available in the refuge, the Charity approached Gwalia Housing Society the aim of improving the services. In 1992, building work began on a six bedroom, purpose built refuge, with disabled facilities and was opened in 1993.
In 2002, our outreach office was opened. This provided an opportunity for women living in the community to access our services. To develop this service further, we were fortunate to secure funding from The Welsh Assembly Government. This enabled us to employ Floating Support workers, which gave us the resources to support an extra 15 families.
The group continued to strive working as a collective and whilst this had been adequate and appropriate, by 2006/07 the Charity had grown to 13 members of staff and our income had risen to £403,695 per annum. Due to the continuing growth of the group in 2006 collective was disbanded and a manager was appointed along with the implementation of a hierarchical structure. In October 2007, we became an Incorporated Charity limited by guarantee. In March 2009, with funds from the Welsh Government, we purchased our community based ‘One Stop Shop’ opening in March 2011.
In 2013 we became an accredited Agored Cymru Centre and secured European Social Funding (ESF), allowing us to deliver educational programmes for individuals, aiming to reduce economic inactivity in Carmarthenshire and convergence areas. In August 2014 we were successful in our application to the Big Lottery for a 3 year Early Family Intervention Project, this allowed us to diversify our service further to work holistically with the whole family including perpetrators.
